National HBCU Alumni Alliance

Supporting Future HBCU Leaders while building the largest Network of HBCU Alumni globally.

The National HBCU Alumni Alliance (NHAA) is a nationwide network of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) alumni. NHAA plays a crucial role in fostering connections among alumni, supporting educational initiatives, and promoting the accomplishments of HBCU graduates.

Established in Atlanta, GA, in 2004 as a non-profit community-based organization consisting of local alumni associations, the National HBCU Alumni Alliance is the largest network in the nation comprised of HBCU graduates. Its outreach network includes over one million individuals in various fields of business enterprise, entertainment, sports, and academia. Since our inception in 2004, our reach has extended to affiliate chapters in Atlanta, GA; Washington, DC; and Philadelphia, PA.

Overview

The National HBCU Alumni Alliance wanted to take its old website, which was showing its age and lacking content, infographics, movement, color, or style, and create a new, refreshed site that popped and featured its tech-forward offerings.

Because of previous work done for the Philadelphia HBCU Alumni Alliance, the NHAA trusted us to build its new web presence from scratch, establishing a robust online presence and enhancing engagement.

The Challenge

The previous National HBCU Alumni Alliance website faced several issues that hindered its effectiveness in engaging alumni, donors, and community supporters:

  • Poor Performance & Speed—The website’s performance score was 8/30, and page load times exceeded 15 seconds.
  • SEO & Visibility IssuesThe site’s permission to index was set to deny, making it unsearchable on Google. It also had missing meta descriptions and improper structuring.
Mobile Usability Problems – Some images lacked tap targets, impacting navigation and accessibility.
  • Security Concerns—The website lacked a firewall and was running an outdated version of PHP, which poses security risks.
  • Limited Donation & Engagement Features – There is no clear call to action for donations, volunteering, or HBCU scholarship programs.
  • Inadequate Content Organization – The HBCU listing and events information were hard to find, limiting user engagement.

Solution

To address these challenges, we executed a full-scale website redesign and development implementing:

  • Faster Load Times – Reduced from 15s to under 5s.
  • SEO Fixes – Enabled indexing, improved metadata, and restructured content.
  • Mobile Optimization – Fully responsive with better navigation.
  • Security Upgrades – Added a firewall and updated PHP.
  • Donation & Engagement Features – New “Ways to Give” for donations, sponsorships, and volunteering.
  • Improved Content Navigation:
    • Scholarship Section – Highlighting HBCU scholarships.
    • Find an HBCU – Interactive directory with A-Z and map view.
    • Events Page – Centralized alumni and community events.
    • Ways to Get Involved – Volunteer, mentor, and contribute.
